Sunshine

„James Dean a Elvis Presley were standing in front of me at the the supermarket cash register line. James had a bottle of Sunshine Lemonade in his shopping basket. He turns around and tells me that one day I will be as famous as him.“ That is the answer the Sunshine singer and guitarist Kay managed to slip into the czechcore.cz interview, pretending it is his dream from childhood. It was back in 2001, when the hardcore trio from Tábor with sweet name Sunshine has been on the scene for seven years. By that time the band released three albums, toured America twice and Europe once, was friends with At The Drive-In or ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, but still remained on the Indie level.

One thing was for sure, the band didn’t want to waste their time on the local scene. Sunshine wanted to face the big challenge. The evil intuition led them to the right place and they met with famous producer Ross Robinson (Korn, Limp Bizkit, The Cure). Their song Streamlined was part of the Blair Witch II. movie soundtrack, they performed twice at the prestigious NY CMJ festival and the most important year of their career came in 2003. One of the band members Marty left the band and Amák joined in on bass. Trio Kay, Dan and Amák signed up another guitarist Jiří (ex Landmine Spring).

The deal was done and Sunshine became the unbeatable crew, each of them being character with special virtues. This is when they were approached by an offer not so common for the Czech scene. One of the most respected composers, Linda Perry (ex-4 Non Blondes with tracks for Pink, Christina Aguilera, Courtney Love or Gwen Stefani and owner of the Custard record company) signed four record contract with Sunshine.

They left for wild Japanese tour and after that jumped straight into recording the Moonshower and Razorblades album. Recording in the best California studios under supervision of producer Brendon Burgdorf (Pink, Green Day, Tom Waits) Sunshine found themselves in the electropunk purgatory. No other record before has reflected the concert intensity of the band ability to cut with velvet and stroke with razor. The tracks beat by cool heart beat and flow over the guitar horizons. Moonshower and Razorblades is like a bottle of luxury perfume thrown against the wall. The trip hop magician Tricky recorded the vocals for Neon Religion track, some of the tracks have been remixed by Fisherspooner, Amen or Chris Corner (Sneaker Pimps), whose personal project I AM X remixed the Lower Than Low track into sexy track with the ability to crawl under your skin.

In autumn 2004 Sunshine leave for warm-up tour with The Faint and accross America tour with Sparta (ex At The Drive-In), all in 1.000 people concert halls. Followed by concerts and promotion, the Moonshower and Razorblades album is first released in the Czech Republic and one month later in the States and Great Britain. With their discipline, potential and good luck, Sunshine fullfilled dream of many Czech bands and became global band. They will probably never be more famous then James Dean from Kay’s dream, but the important thing is, they joined the celebrity line in the music world supermarket.
